Trier, 24 August 2014 – ADAC-Rallye Deutschland saw the return of Timo van
der Marel in WRC after being absent for almost two years. Last year (2013)
the Dutch driver had a convincing season in the Belgian Ford Fiesta Sporting
Trophy (winning all 7 rounds) and earlier this year he was contracted by
Vacansoleil to become the leading driver of their new rally team; after having
been the proud title sponsor of a professional cycling team for many years
Vacansoleil are new in the rallying world.
The program for Timo van de Marel consists of 4 rally’s in his home country
The Netherlands plus 2 WRC events (Germany and Spain). Van der Marel is
driving a R2 Ford Fiesta, run by the Dutch MCC Sport team and he is using the
professional co-driving support of his Australian girlfriend Rebecca Smart.
With hardly any competition this year Van der Marel and Smart came to Trier
to return in rallying at the highest level with the objective to demonstrate
their skills and their speed – which they did in great style! With their Fiesta
they started in the R2 (RC4) class with no less than 27 participants, 18 of them
driving a similar Ford Fiesta of which 10 are entered in the Drive DMACK
Fiesta Trophy, using the sustainable GEM Fuel, giving some additional power.
Although Van der Marel was unlucky when hitting a block of concrete being
moved on the road by one of the competitors starting ahead of him on the
very first day of the rally, Van der Marel could rejoin competition under Rally 2
regulations on Saturday to start a remarkable series of promising times. On
Saturday Van der Marel was hindered by his late starting position which
resulted in different (wetter!) conditions on stages 9 – 14 (see table below).
“I’m very pleased that we had the chance to compete again at WRC level and
everything went well, except for the little incident on Stage 5. I’m impressed
by the performance of the Fiesta R2 and the DMACK tyres and we are looking
forward to our next WRC outing,” Timo van der Marel said at the finish.
